The Fort Saint Joseph was erected in 1748 northeast of Cap-Haitien in the "Rival" district. This mountainous and strategic place not far from "Carénage" dominates the entire bay of Cap. Alongside other fortifications in the region, including Fort-Magny and Fort-Picolet, it formed the thriving, wealthy and prosperous Cap-Français defense system.
